About

My name is Joe Bialkowsky.  I was born and raised in Spokane and it is where I currently live with my wife and two young children.  I am formally trained in art having graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelors of Fine Art, and from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a Masters of Fine Art in Imaging Arts.  For the last nineteen years I have been making my living as a pilot, and continuing to make art.

Painting was where I had my start as an artist and I see the camera as an extension of it, I use the camera as a paintbrush creating images that to me are more rooted in modern painting than photography.  I am heavily influenced by abstract expressionism, landscape painting/photography, minimalism, and the Düsseldorf school (look it up they are incredible).   The images I produce are photography in a sense but they are not informed by being photographs, the camera is the medium.

The sky and the horizon have always fascinated me, I find the infinite boundaries they suggest to be sublimely beautiful and hopeful.  This body of work is very much about aviation and space, and that blending of the natural sublime with the technical fascinates me and fills me with wonder.  I hope some of this comes through for you as well.

If you have any questions about the work or are interested in purchasing please email me at jbialkowsky@gmail.com.
